gemsam - an online journal of gem & sam's travels around the world blog all blog -- gemsam gem & sam's travel blog array ( [post] = array ( [3] = 3.jpg ) [category] = array ( [19] = 19.gif [14] = 14.gif [23] = 23.gif [25] = 25.gif [26] = 26.gif [16] = 16.gif [17] = 17.gif [20] = 20.gif [24] = 24.gif [18] = 18.gif [21] = 21.gif [22] = 22.gif ) [blog] = array ( [5] = 5.jpg ) [user] = array ( [3] = 3.jpg [1] = 1.jpg [4] = 4.jpg [2] = 2.jpg ) ) ) -- beijing & the great wall posted: 17/07/07 at 10:31:28 am by sam , 538 words, 1318 views categories: 9. china array ( [post] = array ( [3] = 3.jpg ) [category] = array ( [19] = 19.gif [14] = 14.gif [23] = 23.gif [25] = 25.gif [26] = 26.gif [16] = 16.gif [17] = 17.gif [20] = 20.gif [24] = 24.gif [18] = 18.gif [21] = 21.gif [22] = 22.gif ) [blog] = array ( [5] = 5.jpg ) [user] = array ( [3] = 3.jpg [1] = 1.jpg [4] = 4.jpg [2] = 2.jpg ) ) ) -- "he who has not climbed the great wall is not a true man." - mao zedong according to that quote, gem and i are now fully fledged men as yesterday not only did we visit the wall, we trekked along some of the most spectacular sections for 4 hours! most people visit a tourist hotspot and get to glimpse a restored section of the wall through endless crouds. we thought we would take the more interesting option and hike from jinshanling to simati. this probably sounds like quite a relaxing stroll, however i assure you it wasn't, the climbs and falls between each watch tower are relentless, and although some parts of the wall were in a very good condition most sections are the original remains (ie. rubble!). that said and done, we had a spectacular day and i'm looking forward to showing off the pictures when i get home! the rest of our time in beijing has been spent site-seeing and shopping. we can't believe how cheap, but yet good quality the fake products are here. i thought bangkok in thailand was going to be the best place in the world for tourist shopping - i was very wrong, beijing is much better by a long way! however, i don't want to give the wrong impression here! we've now run out of money so the shopping has mainly been window based with a few treats splashed onto the credit card. today we visited tiananmen square, the world's largest public square in the heart of beijing. just watching the mass of crouds shuffling around was impressive and the photos we posed for with chinese tourists were quite amusing - we were given flags to hold for one set of photos (which they even let us keep!). after the square we visited the forbidden city which is a mass of ancient buildings (palaces and halls) dating from around the 1400s - all very impressive! beijing is a wonderful city and it certainly rates in my top 10 cities of the world so far. the only downside is the constant smog. the chinese all believe it is fog (perhaps clever propaganda) and i'm sure some part of the problem is fog, however the fact it is here 24/7 whether it's raining or trying to shine sunshine tells me it's not really fog and probably something a little less environmentally friendly. probably best i don't say too much, the tourist police will pop along and i'll never get home! this will probably be my last post whilst travelling so i'm not going to upload any photos - we'll save them to show off when home. our flight home leaves beijing at 10:30am beijing time on thursday 19th july and lands back in england at 3:00pm gmt. i'm looking forward to getting back but sad to be leaving our 6 month holiday, probably the longest holiday we'll have until we retire now! i'll no doubt post a summary when home to properly conclude this blog, but in the meantime as i started this post with a quote, i shall also finish with one that seems pretty close to the truth...
